Pennary is a free, privacy-first PDF toolkit that runs entirely inside your web browser. Open a PDF and you can view it, merge several files into one, split out the pages you need, rotate and reorder pages, compress a large file, scan documents with your phone camera, read text with OCR, and convert pages to images or editable formats — then download the result. Your files never leave your device and are never uploaded to any server.
We built Pennary around a simple frustration. The everyday document jobs — shrinking a scan to fit an email, pulling one page out of a report, making a photographed page searchable — are small tasks, yet the usual free websites ask you to upload the document to their servers first. For a holiday flyer that is fine. For a bank statement, a signed contract, a certificate or an identity document, it means handing your private papers to a stranger's computer and trusting a deletion promise you cannot verify. Pennary removes that trade-off.
Most online PDF tools upload your documents to their servers to process them. Pennary does not. Every operation happens locally, in your browser, using open web technology. There is no upload step, no queue, and no copy of your file sitting on someone else's machine — which is not a policy we ask you to trust but a direct consequence of the design. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and keep working, which is the clearest possible proof that your file is staying with you. Open a PDF and work with it instantly — no sign-up, no account, no watermark. Combine several PDFs into one, pull out the pages you need, fix page order and orientation, compress a file down to email size, and mark up documents with highlights, freehand drawing, and text notes. On a phone, scan a page straight from the camera with automatic edge detection and clean-up. Recognise text on a page with on-device OCR, and convert pages to JPG, PNG, Word or Excel. It is built to be fast, simple, and honest about privacy and about its own limits. There is nothing to install for the web version, it works on any modern browser on phone or computer, and it keeps a clean, distraction-free interface with light and dark themes. We try never to oversell — where a conversion cannot be perfect or an OCR result needs proofreading, our guides say so plainly. Ads keep the web version free; they never track your documents, which the tool cannot see in the first place.
Pennary is a small, independent project built and maintained in India. It is not backed by a large company, which is exactly why the privacy-first, on-device approach is at its core rather than an afterthought. Feedback shapes what we build next, and real people read every message that comes in.
